Rijksmuseum Opening Hours (2026): Best Times to Visit & Avoid Crowds

The Rijksmuseum runs on a simple, consistent schedule — the same hours every day of the year, with no closures for public holidays. But knowing the hours is only half of planning a good visit. The busier the time slot, the harder it becomes to actually see paintings like Rembrandt’s The Night Watch or Vermeer’s The Milkmaid without a wall of phones between you and the canvas. What Are the Rijksmuseum Opening Hours?

The Rijksmuseum keeps one of the most visitor-friendly schedules of any major European museum. Unlike the Louvre (closed Tuesdays) or the Prado (closed Christmas and New Year’s), the Rijksmuseum welcomes visitors 365 days a year on a fixed 9 AM to 5 PM schedule. There are no seasonal changes, no weekly closed days, and no early-closing evenings.

Last entry is at 4:30 PM. Once you’re inside, you can stay until closing regardless of your original start time — the museum begins clearing galleries about 15 minutes before 5 PM.

Opening Hours for the Museum Shop, Café, and Gardens

The museum’s retail and dining areas run on slightly different hours than the galleries themselves, which is useful to know if you want to linger after your visit or grab something without buying a gallery ticket.

The Rijksmuseum Shop and the Rijksmuseum Café are both open 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Between 9 AM and 5 PM they’re only accessible to visitors with a museum entry ticket, but between 5 PM and 6 PM anyone can walk in without a ticket. If you want a Delftware print or a Vermeer poster without paying €25 to enter the galleries, that one-hour window in the evening is your opportunity.

RIJKS, the museum’s Michelin-starred restaurant in the Philips Wing, keeps a narrower schedule: lunch Wednesday through Sunday, dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Reservations are essential and can be made independently of museum admission.

The Rijksmuseum Gardens — the free outdoor sculpture garden surrounding the building — are open 9 AM to 6 PM in summer and close during the off-season. You don’t need a ticket to walk through them, making them one of the best free things to do at the Rijksmuseum when the weather cooperates.

How the Timed-Entry System Works

Since 2022, the Rijksmuseum has operated on mandatory timed entry. There’s no walk-up line for paid visitors. When you book, you select a date and a 15-minute entry window — say, 10:00 AM or 11:15 AM. You must arrive within that window; late arrivals may be asked to rebook.

This applies to everyone, including:

• Adult ticket holders (€25)
• Visitors under 18 (free, but still require a booking)
• CJP and EYCA cardholders (€11.25)
• Museumkaart holders (free entry, still requires a time slot booking)
• I Amsterdam City Card holders (free entry, still requires a time slot booking)

The only people who don’t need to book in advance are Friends of the museum and ICOM/ICOMOS pass holders. Everyone else — no exceptions. A limited number of tickets are held back for walk-up purchase at the entrance on any given day, but these sell out fast on busy days, so counting on them is a gamble.

When Is the Rijksmuseum Least Crowded?

The museum welcomes roughly 2.7 million visitors per year, and they don’t spread evenly across the calendar. Two factors determine how crowded a given slot will be: the day of the week and the time of day.

The 9 AM slot on a Tuesday or Wednesday is the single best combination for a quiet visit. The Gallery of Honour — where The Night Watch hangs — is close to empty for the first 20–30 minutes after doors open. By 11 AM, the room is shoulder-to-shoulder on any day of the week.

After 3 PM on weekdays is the second-best window. Tour groups have generally cycled through by then, families are leaving to eat, and the last admissions at 4:30 PM create a natural tapering of crowd density.

Saturdays and Sundays between 11 AM and 3 PM are the worst time to visit. The museum caps ticket numbers per slot, but the most popular galleries feel packed even so. If a weekend visit is your only option, book the earliest or latest available slot.

Peak season runs July through August and during European school holidays (late February, Easter week, late October). January, February, and November are the quietest full months, outside of Dutch school breaks.

Does the Rijksmuseum Have Late Opening or Evening Hours?

The Rijksmuseum does not currently run a regular late-opening night like the Van Gogh Museum’s Friday openings or the Louvre’s Nocturnes. The museum closes at 5 PM seven days a week.

Best Month to Visit the Rijksmuseum

If you have flexibility on when to come to Amsterdam, the ideal months for the Rijksmuseum are January, February (outside of school holiday week), and November. Crowds are light, Amsterdam is affordable, and you’ll see the collection properly. April through June offers the best weather plus the tulip season across the Netherlands, at the cost of heavier museum traffic. July and August should be avoided if you have the choice — lines to security can take 30 minutes even with a timed ticket, and the galleries feel compressed.

Can You Visit the Rijksmuseum on Public Holidays?

Because the museum stays open on days when most of Amsterdam effectively shuts down, public holidays can actually be one of the better times to visit. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day see notably lighter crowds because most tourists are elsewhere. King’s Day (April 27) is the exception — the city fills up with Dutch revelers in orange, and Museumplein is chaotic, though the museum interior itself stays manageable.

The museum closes early only in very rare circumstances (major city emergencies, royal state events), always announced on the official site well in advance.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

Rijksmuseum tickets don’t sell out six weeks ahead like the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum, but specific time slots can run out, especially weekend mornings in peak season. A safe rule:
